Today's Didim is a rapidly growing holiday resort compared to the other resorts of Turkey. Altinkum is totally different to what it used to be 10-15 years ago.
About 15 years ago, the people from large cities around Turkey such as Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir first came to Altinkum and started to build their own summer houses, holiday homes, apartments, villas, duplexes and triplexes. When Turkey's economy started to decline these people found it very hard to survive in the big cities and the summer house owners who were mainly retired from their jobs then decided to move into the small resorts such as Altinkum, Yesilkent, Akbuk & Mavisehir.
ALTINKUM means "golden sands" ("altin: gold" + "kum: sand") and with its beaches which gently shelve into the inviting turquoise blue Aegean, you will soon see how the resort got its name. Altinkum has something for everyone. During the day you can relax on one of its three beaches. The main beach, or first beach is the largest of its beaches and has a promenade of shops, bars, hotels, restaurants and night clubs. The Second beach is to the left of the main beach, this is much smaller but still has its own bars and restaurants. The Third beach area is beyond the luna park and is the smaller of the three beaches. This is a quiet beach with a few restaurants which are right on the beach. A large 5 star Hotel is being built here along with Marina and a golf course which is due to be completed soon.
At night Altinkum has much to offer from the quiet to the lively with its wide variety of restaurants, bars and night clubs.
On Saturday you can visit the local market which is located in Yenihisar the local town just a 10 min bus ride from the sea front. Here you can buy just about everything and it is a good place to experience the locals selling their wares.
Didim itself is very close to ancient towns and natural wonders comparing to most of the holiday resorts of Turkey. Altinkum is located on the crossroads of a superb holiday resort, history, art and the culture.
During the summer season which starts the beginning of May there are boat trips organised daily. Water sports, diving courses, fishing tours are also available.
You can discover the area itself by local travel agents who have organised tours to Lake Bafa, Akköy village, Didyma - Miletos - Priene, Söke Market, Kusadasi Market, Bodrum, Ephesus - Virgin Mary's house, Pamukkale, Aphrodisias, Dalyan, etc... or by our assistance.
AKBUK: Akbuk is a very new township it was developed in 1991. This is a very peaceful and beautiful area with some breath taking panoramic views. Much of this area is a preserved green belt area and there are building restrictions in force to preserve its beauty. It has its own beach area and a few restaurants, this is a wonderful area for anyone that wants to just relax and let the world go by. There are a few three and four star hotels and even though this area has been explored by tour operators it still remains the quietest of the local resorts. Akbuk can be reached by the local bus service that runs approx every 20 minutes from Altinkum.
YESILKENT: This is situated to the left of Altinkum. This is a little more developed than Akbuk but is still a very quiet and beautiful area with some of its own very nice beaches. The local bus service also runs out to Yesilkent from Altinkum.
MAVISEHIR: The properties in Mavisehir are the typical Turkish home. Many of the properties around here are also used as holiday homes for the Turkish. Mavisehir is a very quaint area and has lots of character, there is a private beach area and it has its own Turkish market which is open all day every day during peak season. There are a few cafes and seating areas by the beach, and in the evening the Turkish can be found socialising and playing the local games of backgammon and ok. There are a few small shops which are open all year round and it now boasts its own supermarket. Mavisehir can be reached by the local bus service and is about ten minutes from the new Aqua Park.
